Recently watched: panned by the critics but the middle third of Gone will hold your attention well enough, as Jill Conway (Amanda Seyfried) tries to locate her kidnapped sister whilst on the run from the police, who don’t believe her story. It’s nothing special but it’s a lot better than an 11% rating.

The casting for the young versions is spectacular - they have everything correct, right down to the hand-mannerisms. (Also, now that we know just how long Strange and Morse have known each other, it makes The Remorseful Day very, very poignant.)

The Straight Story must be the slowest road movie ever made. And that pace is the point. Somewhere along the way, our world got itself in a damn hurry. And maybe more than any great American road movie – counter-culture trip (Easy Rider), burnt-rubber hellride (Natural Born Killers), wistful wine run (Sideways), feminist freedom trail (Thelma & Louise) – it took an old man on a lawnmower to remind us that life’s journey should never be rushed.

One of my all-time favourites.
